Overview:

Girl Scouts is the preeminent leadership development organization for girls providing 100+ years experience in research-proven, outcomes-driven programming through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Girl Scouts of NE KS & NW MO is one of 112 Girl Scout councils across the United States. Our council is chartered by GSUSA and supports more than 15,000 girl members and 7,000 adult volunteers in a 47-county jurisdiction surrounding the Greater Kansas City, Topeka and St. Joseph areas.

The Grant Writer is responsible for researching, identifying, and writing proposals and applications for both public and private grant opportunities and reporting progress to support the organization's fundraising program priorities. This role works with the development team and is also responsible for partnering with program leaders within the organization to strategize and ensure grant goals are met to achieve Council goals and support the Girl Scout mission.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough research to identify potential grant funding opportunities from foundations, corporations, government agencies, and other sources.
  • Stay informed about grant opportunities that align with Girl Scouts of NEKS & NWMOs mission and programs.
  • Evaluate and prioritize grant prospects based on eligibility, fit, and potential funding impact.
  • Collaborate with program staff, directors of development, and executive leadership to develop comprehensive grant proposals that effectively communicate the organization's goals, objectives, and impact.
  • Write clear, concise, and compelling narratives, ensuring alignment with grant guidelines and requirements.
  • Compile and organize supporting documents, budgets, and other necessary materials for grant submissions.
  • Coordinate and facilitate review processes to gather feedback and ensure proposal quality and accuracy.
  • Assist with monitoring and tracking grant deliverables, deadlines, and reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with program staff to collect data and information necessary for grant reporting.
  • Prepare and submit timely and accurate grant reports, ensuring compliance with funder guidelines and reporting requirements.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, English, or equivalent educational experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years or more grant writing experience with demonstrated ability to raise large gifts through grants. Specific experience writing United Way, and other large complex grants is required.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills with the ability to develop and deliver compelling arguments regarding the value proposition of Girl Scouts.
  • Deadline driven.
  • Ability to express ideas and facts in a clear and understandable manner appropriate for the individual or group; listens to and comprehends what others are saying.
  • Solid problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills, strong attention to detail and time management skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize work assignments and business needs in order to meet complex timelines.
  • An understanding of the principles of fundraising; current issues and trends in fundraising; and grant writing including case/proposal development.
  • Self-motivated to set, attain and surpass goals, with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of using donor databases. Raiser's Edge/NXT experience desired.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of budgeting and accounting.
  • Commitment to maintain confidentiality of information, records and materials.
  • Self-management and assurance - assesses own skills and abilities and identifies areas for improvement; willingly accepts constructive feedback; seeks developmental opportunities; sets and achieves goals; works independently.
  • Demonstrated confidence to prepare for conversations and visits with potential donors by gathering key information and setting strong objectives to achieve successful outcome.
  • Active Listening - ability to skillfully use a variety of questions and other active listening techniques to promote a robust discussion with program leaders and donors.
  • Technical computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and social networking, including ability to utilize technology for research.
