Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Chemical Engineer to work onsite in our Modeling and Simulation department. We are looking for a accomplished chemical, mechanical, or materials engineer with strong modeling skills, particularly in fluid dynamics and heat transfer processes, with an emphasis on multiphase flow and chemical reactions. You will extend to diverse applications, spanning waste management, nuclear energy, additive manufacturing, and clean energy systems. You will report to the Senior Manager of Materials Science & Manufacturing. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located in Idaho Falls, Idaho with every other Friday off. Responsibilities Include:

  • Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, and design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards.
  • Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements to ensure technical features important to design responsibilities are maintained.
  • Oversee or otherwise ensure that fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement are done following the design.
  • Develop processes for separating components of liquids and gasses, or for generating electrical currents, by using controlled chemical processes.
  • Use programming to develop and implement process controls and/or tracking mechanisms for existing applications and processes/newly implemented process, equipment, and applications that support and interface with the overarching programmatic drivers, interfaces, and goals.
  • Prepare process flow diagrams; heat and material balances; and chemical process equipment, utility, and consumable requirements for process design development. Decompose project goals into defined and controlled design requirements.
  • Establish optimum process design and operating parameters and limitations through application of chemical process simulations, hazards analysis, and testing. This may include application of engineering principles to monitor and evaluate conditions and operational performance if plant systems related to chemical engineering; recommend maintenance standards and procedures, identify vendor data, replacement, and spare parts; coordinate resources and priorities necessary to attain or maintain the appropriate system condition.
  • Participate in system design and fabrication as well the testing for these research, development, and demonstration programs. Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support and verify design.
  • Set up and perform a variety of unique laboratory research studies to prove new principles.
  • Maintain familiarity with and technical understanding of codes and standards applicable to the discipline.
  • Identify new research opportunities, contribute to the direction technical teams, respond to research opportunities, and help generate technical proposals and securing funding for research activities.
Qualifications: Minimum Requirements:
  • Level 2: Doctorate Degree and 0 years of Experience
  • Level 3: Doctorate Degree and 2 years of experience. At least 1 year of experience in chemical reaction modeling, high performance computing, Cantera software experience, and programming skills especially, Python.
Job Information:
  • The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($75,804 - $155,496) / Level 3($91,008 - $186,588). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
